Three Lawrence brothers have purchased the insurance side of the Al Haverty Real Estate and Insurance business in Lawrence's downtown.
Jeff, 27, Tom, 29, and Tim Arensberg, 30, who are co-owners of Arensberg Shoes, 825 Mass., bought the insurance business from Haverty last week, Jeff Arensberg said Wednesday.
"Tom and I are going to be working partners in this," Jeff Arensberg said. Tim Arensberg will continue to work in the shoe store.
Jeff Arensberg said they will continue to use the existing name of the insurance business at 802 Mass., although they may change the name in the future.
The brothers also will continue their partnership in the shoe store, Arensberg said.
"We really wanted to get out on our own and do something on our own," Jeff Arensberg said. "So this opportunity came up and we took it. We really wanted to stay in Lawrence. We wanted to stay downtown. And the office is down here. The whole opportunity just kind of fit together."
Jeff Arensberg said he and Tom recently passed the state's property and casualty examinations and now are learning about the insurance business.
Haverty will continue to own the real estate side of the business, Jeff Arensberg said. Jeff said that he and Tom will work as real estate agents for Haverty, who will remain the broker for the real estate firm.
Jeff Arensberg, who unsuccessfully ran for city commission earlier this year, said he had worked in his family's retail shoe business for more than 10 years. His father, Jack Arensberg, opened the Lawrence shoe store in 1958, after opening a shoe store in Atchison in 1955 with his brother, Lee.
Haverty said he opened the real estate and insurance business in 1962.
He said there was no particular reason he decided to sell to the Arensberg brothers.
"It just seemed like we were talking one day and it came up," he said. "I'm just planning to devote more time to selling real estate."
