Eleven Kansas University seniors have received Hilltopper Awards, sponsored by KU's Jayhawker Yearbook. The students were chosen for their service and leadership in campus and community activities and their academic achievement.
The seniors will be honored at a reception tentatively scheduled for Jan. 29 by the Hilltopper committee at the Adams Alumni Center. Chancellor Gene Budig or Judith A. Ramaley, executive vice chancellor for the Lawrence campus, will speak. Each honored senior will receive a plaque.
The 1990 Hilltoppers are Thomas Clark, Kansas City, Mo.; Michael Diggs, Ned Nixon and David St. Peter, all of Wichita; Brenda Eisele, Fredonia; Eric Hanson, Olathe; Jeff Morris, Salina; Kevin Pritchard, Nashville, Tenn.; Eladio Valdez, Kansas City, Kan.; Manju Velayuthampillai, Lawrence; and Bradley "Jake" White, North Platte, Neb.
The Hilltopper Award was established in the 1930s to recognize seniors who have made important contributions to the university and the Lawrence community in non-academic areas of campus life. The award was discontinued in 1973 and revived in 1984.
Each nominee submitted a brief application describing his or her campus and community involvement and two letters of recommendation. Selection criteria included campus and community activities and cumulative grade point average.
The selection committee comprised six KU faculty members and four students, including the Jayhawker editors. The committee selected the 11 students from 30 applicants.
