In the last few days, Lawrence police have received several reports of violence between husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends. Perhaps because this is supposed to be a happy season, such reports seem particularly sad.
The holidays can be stressful. They seldom live up to expectations. Even though it's Christmas, partners still can be demanding, and children still can be cranky. There is too much to do and not enough time or maybe money to do it. It's easy to lose your temper.
In addition to the incidents reported to police, there probably are many others, just as serious, that go unreported. And there probably are even more that are less serious, but still disturbing. Crying children and yelling parents seem especially abundant in stores and shopping centers. Holiday get-togethers bring out old family problems and resentments.
Family violence certainly isn't restricted to the holidays, but it's a good time to remember and emphasize love and caring, rather than anger and conflict.
