A 20-year-old Lawrence man and two 16-year-old Lawrence boys were arrested Saturday in connection with the burglary of two homes and the theft of Christmas presents and other items. Lawrence police reported today that officers arrested the suspects following a burglary in the 2200 block of Pennsylvania at 9:52 p.m. Police reported that a woman living near the house summoned officers after seeing one of the suspects enter a basement window of the house. When officers arrived, the suspects ran away but later were apprehended in the area. Police believe the suspects also burglarized a home in the 500 block of East 22nd Street. Police reported that numerous Christmas gifts and other items were seized in the arrest. The stolen items were valued together at $2,010.
Police arrested a 25-year-old Lawrence man who allegedly entered and damaged his ex-girlfriend's residence between 11 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. Police reported that a 30-year-old Lawrence woman told officers that the two had been arguing earlier Saturday at a party. When the woman returned to her house several hours later, she discovered that someone had punched holes in the walls, broken several doors, destroyed her clocks and caused further damage. Total damage was estimated at $2,000. The man was released on a $1,000 bond and was ordered to appear Jan. 10 in Douglas County District Court.
A 20-year-old Lawrence woman was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for injuries she suffered during a fight with her husband about 7:30 a.m. Saturday at their apartment in the 700 block of West 25th. Police reported that the man struck the woman several times and hit her over the head two times with a beer bottle before a roommate intervened. Police arrested the man about 10:30 a.m. This morning, he was being held in the Douglas County Jail without bond.
Lawrence police announced today that investigators discovered marijuana plants and plant-growing paraphernalia while searching a house in the 900 block of Lawrence Avenue that was severely damaged by fire Thursday. A police spokesman today said the owner of the residence, a 34-year-old Lawrence man, and his wife, 29, are considered suspects but have not been arrested. Police reported that investigators found five living marijuana plants and several shop-lights in the basement of the house, which sustained $65,000 damage in the fire.
A 19-year-old Lawrence man arrested in connection with the theft of a pizza delivery car remained in the Douglas County Jail this morning awaiting a court appearance. Lawrence police said today that an 18-year-old delivery driver told officers that he had parked his four-door car about 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Stewart Avenue and left it running while he went to deliver a pizza. While the driver was away from the car, police said, another man entered it and drove off. He was stopped while driving the car in the 1100 block of West 23rd.
Jeffrey F. Carr Jr., 20, and Phillip A. Crum, 21, both of 1621 Edgehill, were treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for injuries they suffered in a one-car accident at 2:32 a.m. today. Police reported that Carr was driving a vehicle north on Edgehill when he lost control, slid off the road and struck a retaining wall near Louisiana Street. He was cited for driving too fast for road conditions.
Stanford Tracy, 21, who lives in Osceola-Keokuk Hall on the Haskell Indian Junior College campus, was treated and released at LMH after a car-pedestrian accident at 7:06 p.m. Sunday on 23rd just east of Massachusetts. Police reported that Tracy was running across 23rd and didn't see a car being driven west on 23rd by Kansas University student Michael A. Frost, 19, 1800 Engel.
Three people were treated and released at LMH after an accident at 7:30 p.m. Saturday on West Sixth Street west of Indiana. Police reported today that Erin K. Magee, 31, Kansas City, Kan., was traveling east on Sixth when her car hit the rear of a car driven by Gretchen A. Clark, 28, 408 Ind. The collision knocked Clark's car into the westbound lanes, where it collided with a car driven west by Sheldon L. Shogrin, 20, 648 Schwarz. Magee, Shogrin and Chad Keller, 18, a passenger in Shogrin's car, were taken to the hospital.
