Jason Smith

Jason Lee Smith, 43, Olathe, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017. Jason was born August 4, 1973, in Topeka the son of Harold “Hal” and Deborah “Debi” Atteberry Smith. He was a 1991 graduate of Washburn Rural High School. It was during his time in high school that he first volunteered at the Mission Township Fire Department. Jason received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Washburn University in 1996. He worked for the Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority, during which he graduated first in his class from the Police Academy. Jason then joined the LawrenceDouglas County Fire Medical in March of 1997. He was promoted to Engineer in 2005, to Lieutenant in 2011 and to Captain in 2016. He served as an Arson Investigator, received two Cardiac Commendations and was IAFF Local 1596 Union Fire Fighter of the year in 2003. Throughout his career, he obtained the following certifications Rope Rescue I, Blue Card Incident Commander, Technical Rescue, Fire Officer I and II, Fire Instructor I, JV Fire Setter Intervention Specialist and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. Jason volunteered with the reserve unit on the Topeka Police Department and served on the LawrenceDouglas County Fire Medical Honor Guard from 2006 to 2016. He was a member of IAFF Local 1596 and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Jason and his family attended Shawnee Heights Baptist Church and most recently Fellowship Bible Church. On October 9, 1998, Jason and Stephanie Pryor were united in marriage in Las Vegas; she survives. In his spare time, Jason enjoyed watching KU basketball and listening to music but most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Jason was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Stephanie Smith, of the home; children, Dallas Pryor, Manhattan and Kate Smith, Olathe; parents, Debi and Hal Smith, Topeka; siblings, David Smith (Irina), Troy Smith, both of Topeka and Carmen Bassham (Darryl), Shawnee; brotherinlaw, David Erwin (Tami), Verdon NE; grandparents, Richard and Bettie Atteberry, Topeka as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jason was preceded in death by his brother, Jonathan Smith; aunt, Cheryl Thorp; cousin, Jonathon Thorp and nephew, J.D. Smith. Family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 11th at Fellowship Bible Church, 6800 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka KS 66615. A celebration of Jason’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 12th at Fellowship Bible Church. Inurnment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.
