About this map: Lawrence—and the state of Kansas—has weathered the mortgage crisis better than most. One way to gauge the foreclosure storm is to look at sheriff's sales, which occur when homeonwers stop paying their mortgage and the house is auctioned off to the highest bidder. Most of the time, the property is purchased by the bank that holds the loan. In 2007, Douglas County had 88 homes that went through sheriff's sales. It was just three more than the year before. .
