Ceramicist Ben Ahlvers approaches his sculptures with great care for craft and respect for clay as a medium of fine art. Inspired by personal narrative, Ahlvers develops figures that engage the viewer through attention to detail and humor. These principles played a large part in the development of his upcoming exhibition, Shake. Shaky. Shakey.

Ahlvers’ lively figures, primarily clay with the occasional found object or fabric, exhibit a quality of motion, as though caught mid gesture. The artist achieves this by beginning many of his sculptures with a drawing. He then uses his knowledge of clay construction to capture the movement of the two-dimensional work in a three-dimensional form. Through this process, Ahlvers’ interest in drawing and animation becomes apparent in his final products.

The artist’s work combines his concern with form with an equal attention to tactile detail. Ahlvers does not shy away from the visibility of the artist’s hand; instead, he takes pleasure in the development of his sculpture’s surface. Ahlvers utilizes any tool that might offer an opportunity for an interesting texture, such as a stick against a soft body of clay, to accomplish unique marks within the material.

This marrying of surface and form is a vehicle for Ahlvers to convey personal details from his own life to his viewers. Ahlvers builds figures that capture the personality of those around him, as well as representational sculptures that reflect the objects that surround and inspire the artist.

Through his exhibition, Ahlvers is able to juxtapose sculpted characters and articles in a way that tells an intimate story infused with his sense of humor. This use of comedy allows Ahlvers to discuss with his audience personal subject matter in an accessible yet unique manner, drawing on irony and satire to highlight the dichotomy of light and dark present in life and art.

Shake. Shaky. Shakey. opens at the Invisible Hand Gallery on October 25.
