The Impact of the King James Bible

On display from September through July 2012, the Quayle Bible Collection exhibit will focus on the impact of the King James Bible, especially on American life and culture.

Religious revivals of the early nineteenth century created a great need for bibles that was met by commercial printers and religious organizations. Bible societies printed about 32 million bibles between 1816 and 1880 and commercial publishers created massive family bibles, supplemented with illustrations, commentary and extra pages for family records and even photographs.

Bible reading permeated American culture. A bible was often the only book a family had. It was read and re-read and was used to teach children to read both at home and in school. It was completely familiar and seeped into common speech, public speaking, and literature.
