Bringing back a brass banding tradition that dates back to the beginnings of the city, the FREE STATE BRASS BAND announces its creation as a community based music ensemble. This British style Brass Band has been founded by KU music student Jon Heaver. He will serve as Artistic Director. Professor Scott Watson, Professor of Music in the School of Music at KU will serve as Music Director and Conductor.
The Band will introduce the unique and wonderful sound of the British style brass band to the Lawrence community with its inaugural concert on TUESDAY, JANUARY 28TH at 7:30pm in the historic Plymouth Congregational Church here in Lawrence. Admission is FREE.
Repertoire for this inaugural concert will be a Brit inspired program featuring such classics as Gustav Holst's "Moorside Suite", Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry" (O Danny Boy), R.B. Hall's "Death or Glory March" and Ralph Vaughan William's music "Prelude to the 49th Parallel". Members of the Free State Brass Band are drawn from Lawrence and the Kansas City metro and are a mix of music educators, KU music students, and dedicated professional/amateur brass performers.
There were once over 10,000 brass bands in the United States in the 19th century. The Free State Brass Band is proud to return this tradition to the area and community, and looks forward to presenting concerts and educational outreach as part of its mission.
