Richard Ben Cramer’s seminal book on politics, What It Takes, is arguably the best book ever written about presidential character, with a depth that became a style guide for many contemporary political writers. It is also the definitive book on Bob Dole. Writer, director, producer, Mark Zwonitzer, of PBS’s The American Experience, served as research assistant on the book and the two men developed a personal and professional friendship that would last until Cramer’s untimely death last year. Join Zwonitzer as he takes us inside Cramer’s craft to remember the writer and his acclaimed work with a special look at What It Takes. The Lawrence Public Library is partnering with the Dole Institute to present the lecture.
