The KU School of Music Instrumental Collegium Musicum will present a concert entitled "Playing Cards and Other Diversions" on Thursday, March 14 2013 at 7:30 PM in Swarthout Recital Hall. (Note: Concert was originally scheduled for Feb 25 and was re-scheduled due to the snow storm.) The inspiration for the program is anonymous instrumental pieces from Germany in the 1540s, transmitted on the backs of playing cards produced by the artist Peter Flotner (c. 1490-1546). Other works selected for the program are also related to the eternal human quest for diversion and variety: Florentine carnival songs from around 1500, Renaissance and Baroque dances, and pieces to be enjoyed in domestic situations by noted composers from the 16th to 18th centuries. Images of such diversions will be projected during the concert. The Instrumental Collegium Musicum, directed by Paul Laird, director of musicology at the University of Kansas, performs on instruments like those in use during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including recorders, viola da gamba, Baroque members of the violin family, crumhorns and harpsichord. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the KU School of Music at 785-864-3436. http://www.music.ku.edu
