Internationally acclaimed earthworks artist Stan Herd will share details of his latest adventures, including a future earthwork in Brazil and other projects during a special presentation at the Lawrence Arts Center, Monday, March 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at KU, Herd will show for the first time footage from a yet-to-be-released documentary illustrating his struggle to balance commercial art with other endeavors. The presentation will also feature time-lapse photos of works in progress as well as past ventures, including a New York City project featured in the documentary "Earthworks," a feature film on Herd's life. "Stan Herd's presentation will delight those who have followed his career over the years as well as introduce newcomers to one of Lawrence's most colorful and beloved artists," said Jim Peters, director of the Osher Institute. Peters said Herd is particularly excited by what he calls the "Prairie Renaissance," the collaboration of several nationally known artists who have chosen to make northeast Kansas their home and creative center. A question-and-answer period will be followed by a wine-and-cheese reception in the Arts Center's gallery. The public is invited. Admission is $10. Pre-registration is advised. Call 785-864-5823. Stan Herd's presentation is one of several special events offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at KU, which provides noncredit short courses designed for folks 50 and older (but open to anyone) just for the joy of learning. This spring Osher is offering 43 courses in 20 locations in Lawrence, Topeka, Ottawa and the greater Kansas City area. Courses are generally three two-hour sessions on subjects ranging from history and science to literature and the arts. "An Evening with Stan Herd" is one of six special events offered this spring.
