June 24, 2013 - 7:30 p.m. - Free to the public Trinity Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 1245 New Hampshire, Lawrence, KS Kerry Altenbernd, Vice President of the Black Jack Battlefield Trust, and third generation native of Douglas County, will make a presentation entitled "The Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park: Preserving History and the Environment." Kerry Altenbernd has worked for the last ten years to preserve the Black Jack Battlefield near Baldwin City and serves as On-Site Tour Coordinator for the Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park. Created in 2003 from land saved from residential development, the park helps tell the story of the unique role that the Battle of Black Jack played in our shared history. It also preserves wildlife habitat and provides a place to experience the beauty and tranquility of a natural Kansas landscape in an area undergoing rapid urbanization. Kerry has also been performing first-person interpretations of the abolitionist John Brown at the Battlefield and Nature Park. Optional dinner with Kerry Altenbernd - 5:00 p.m. at Free State Brewery, 636 Massachusetts St, Lawrence, KS The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
