Artist in Residence at The Commons Emilio Chapela Pérez will work with KU students during his residency. One output of their work will be a performance given at Artist Night at The Spencer Museum of Art. Chapela Pérez's work is concerned with the nature of media and its impact on society. It challenges our relationship with everyday tools and technology by forcing media, such as such as books, libraries, computers, Internet and social media, to reveal complex interactions inherent in society. Chapela Pérez's has an academic background in mathematics and communication as well as art, which he studied at Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City. Chapela Pérez has been Artist in Residence at the ISCP in NYC and at L40 in Berlin. He has participated in collective exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (MFAH), the Bass Museum in Miami, Fotofest Houston, NGKB in Berlin, the Pace Gallery and at the Museo de Arte Moderno and the Museo Rufino Tamayo both in Mexico City. He has done solo shows shows at Henrique Faria Fine Art in NY, 11x7 Galeria in Buenos Aires, Galleria Galica in Milan, EDS Galeria in México City and L40 in Berlin.
