The Watkins Community Museum invites the public to “Beer Night,” a pair of programs focusing on the area’s past and present ventures in beer brewing, on Saturday, January 19, beginning at 7:30 PM. At 7:30, Eudora-based journalist and historian Cindy Higgins will present “Kansas Brewers and Breweries.” As settlers streamed into Kansas, brewers set up their mash tuns and wort kettles when making beer was still an art and state prohibition a bemusing notion. Higgins will discuss these brewers of early Kansas, their role in their communities, and how they have influenced Kansas brewers today. “Predominantly German, the first Kansas brewers were more than beer makers,” Higgins said. “They were culture custodians and entertainment sponsors who fostered a sense of community within the state’s many German enclaves.” “Kansas Brewers and Breweries” is part of the Kansas Humanities Council’s The Way We Worked Speakers Bureau, featuring presentations and discussions examining the theme of work and working in Kansas and how these stories help define us. The public is invited to attend this free program. At 8:30, participants can purchase a commemorative beer tasting glass ($10 each, $7 for members of the Douglas County Historical Society) to sample beers and learn about the brewing process with brewers from Free State Brewing Company and 23rd Street Brewery. Members of the Lawrence Brewers Guild will be present to discuss homebrewing. Proceeds from the event will support future programming at the Watkins Museum. The public is invited to attend one or both of the evening’s two programs. Participants must be 21 or over to drink. The event is sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council, Free State Brewing Company, 23rd Street Brewery, Grandstand, and the Lawrence Brewers Guild. Space for the beer tasting portion of the evening is limited.
