Thursday, February 28, the City of Lawrence will host a 1-hour educational class on composting and rain gardens, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Solid Waste Annex North (SWAN) building at 320 NE Industrial Lane. The goal of this class is to provide attendees with enough basic knowledge on composting and rain gardens to begin a project on their own. The class is free and open to the public, but there is limited space available. To enroll, email recycling@lawrenceks.org or call (785) 832-3030. Composting at home is the best way to recycle residential organic waste into an ideal material for improving lawn and garden soils. Compost adds essential nutrients and organic matter to the soil, while also building soil structure by loosening the soil for better root penetration and improving the soil's capacity to hold water. More information is available at www.LawrenceRecycles.org. Rain gardens are an inexpensive, simple to implement and environmentally sound solution to urban stormwater runoff. Creating a rain garden at your home will help filter runoff pollution, conserve water, remove standing water in your yard and reduce potential of home flooding.
