he University of Kansas School of Music will present a faculty recital featuring Stephanie Zelnick, associate professor of clarinet, on February 15, 2013 at 7:30 pm in Swarthout Recital Hall, Murphy Hall. Ellen Bottorff, lecturer, will accompany Zelnick on the piano. A post-Valentine’s Day performance, the musicians hope to keep those romantic feelings alive with the works of Johannes Brahms, Francis Poulenc and Paul-Ben Haim. About Stephanie Zelnick Stephanie Zelnick, Buffet-Crampon artist and associate professor of clarinet at the University of Kansas, has emerged as one of the most dynamic performers of her generation. The San Francisco Classical Voice has described her as “simply sublime,” while the Boulder Daily Camera praised her “exquisite clarinet solos.” She has appeared as a soloist in venues throughout the United States, Asia, South America and Europe. Most recently she has appeared at the Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall; FestaCamera in Medellin, Colombia; the Academia Musicale Vincenzo Bellini in Salerno, Italy; the European Day of Jewish Music in Novi Sad, Serbia; the Berkshire Music Trust in Reading, England; the Congreso del Clarineto in Madrid, Spain; the Timisoara Muzicala Academica in Romania and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. She was an artist in residence at the International Music Festival of the Escola de Musica e Artes Cenicas da Universidade Federal de Goias in Goiania, Brazil, and was also sponsored by Privrednik, Serbia's oldest humanitarian organization, to teach and play concerts throughout the country. She has performed at numerous International Clarinet Association ClarinetFests and taught masterclasses at the Juilliard School and the Florida State University. Zelnick is currently the principal clarinet of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and the Central City Opera, both located in Colorado. She has recently released recordings of Morton Gould's “Derivations” as a featured soloist on the Naxos label; “Waves of Stone” on the Innova label; and “Appunti di Viaggio,” produced by the AccademiaItaliana del Clarinetto. She released her solo album, “Diaspora: Music by Jewish Composers for Clarinet,” in 2011. Her playing can be heard weekly on NPR and Colorado Public Radio. Zelnick has been broadcast on WFMT, Chicago, as part of the Dame Myra Hess Artist Series, and featured on television series in Serbia and Italy. While residing in Europe, she performed with the Czech Chamber Philharmonic, the Prague Opera and the Johann Strauss Opera in Vienna. She has toured Europe as a soloist and member of the Prague International Trio, performing in Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland and Germany. She remains a member of the Prague-based chamber ensemble Classicon XX. With Mariam Adam, clarinetist of the Grammy-nominated Imani Winds, she co-founded the AdZel Duo, which strives to enhance cultural dialogues through music. Recently their AdZel Duo recorded Mohammed Fairouz's “Ughniat” and Anne Guzzo's “The Color of Honey” as part of their ongoing commitment to diverse elements in new music. Zelnick graduated from Rice University with a bachelor’s degree in clarinet performance. She was the recipient of a Fulbright Grant and received an Artist Diploma at the Academy for the Performing Arts in Prague. She earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Northern Colorado. Zelnick recently served on the national peer review committee for the Fulbright Commission. About Ellen Bottorff Pianist Ellen Sommer-Bottorff has quickly established a reputation as a much sought-after collaborative pianist, chamber musician and vocal coach. She performs extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Central and South America and Europe. Most recent engagements have included concerts and master classes at the University of Costa Rica, performances at the International Double Reed convention in Birmingham, England and a lecture recital with violinist Tami Hughes at the IUTGE workshop in Leibniz, Austria. Bottorff often serves as a pianist for regional, national and international competitions and festivals, as well as recital series and radio broadcasts. Additionally, she coaches and performs at the Sound Encounters Suzuki Strings camp and the Brian Lewis Young Artist Program in Ottawa, KS. She is a founding member of Allegresse, an inspiring new trio for flute, oboe and piano. Recently Allegresse was invited to present recitals and master classes and to adjudicate at the nationally-known new music festival, FENAM in Sacramento, California. In January 2012, Allegresse traveled to Puerto Rico, giving performances and master classes in San Juan. Bottorff has collaborated on several professional recordings, including four under the auspices of Potenza Records. Most recently, Ellen collaborated with clarinetist Stephanie Zelnick on the recording, Diaspora: Music of Jewish Composers, and the recent Albany release, Legacy: Music for Violin and Piano by African-American Composers with violinistTami Hughes. In addition to recording, she performed the music of American composer Bryan Kip Haaheim for the Showtime movie, Fall from Grace. From 1994-2004, she was on the keyboard and voice faculty at Missouri Western University, where her students received high honors in state and regional competitions. Currently, Bottorff is a lecturer in piano at the University of Kansas School of Music. She performs regularly with several members of the KU music faculty, visiting artists and graduate students on recitals and concert tours. In addition, Bottorff serves as administrator for the piano accompanying and chamber music programs at KU.
