Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Indoor Aquatic Center will be the site of the First Annual Drown Out Cancer Swim-A-Thon 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 27. The swim-a-thon will be held at the aquatic center, 4706 Overland Drive, and is sponsored by the Drown Out Cancer Foundation and BrightStar Care for the benefit cancer research at the University of Kansas Cancer Center and Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation. The Drown Out Cancer Foundation was started by Dr. Tyghe Nielsen, who was diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer in 2010. Nielsen is a graduate of the University of Kansas. Despite the swim-a-thon, normal lap swim hours will be available. Lap swim will be limited but available during its regular hours, 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. The diving well, as well as the zero-depth and children’s area will be available as scheduled, which is 1-7:30 p.m. for the diving well and 1- 7:45 p.m. for the zero-depth and children’s area. The Drown Out Cancer Foundation will also hold a silent and live auction with live music at Wil Jeny’s Restaurant, 6700 W. 135th St., Overland Park, Kan., beginning at 6:30 p.m. To find out more about the event and the Drown Out Cancer Foundation, please visit the website: http://drownoutcancer.com/.
