By Giacomo Puccini Staged in cooperation with the School of Music and KU Opera Featuring the KU Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Neely Performances are April 19, 20, 27 at 7:30 pm and April 21 at 2:30 pm in the Crafton-Preyer Theatre. The University Theatre joins with the School of Music and KU Opera to stage the most popular work in the Italian opera repertory and the fourth most frequently performed opera worldwide. The KU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Neely, will accompany the poignant story of a group of artists in Paris and the romantic relationship between poet Rodolfo and grisette Mimi. Like the parallel relationship between Rodolfo's roommate and the beautiful Musetta, Mimi and Rodolfo's relationship is full of conflict until they are united tragically when Mimi returns to the garret to die, surrounded by her friends. La Boheme is an exceptional mixture of comedy and tragedy, and its music has a distinctively bittersweet quality. Puccini's magnificent score is a testament to his musical genius. La Boheme received its world premiere in Turin, Italy, in February 1896 at the Teatro Regio, conducted by the young Arturo Toscanini. More recently, it served as the inspiration for the Broadway musical "Rent".
