The Lawrence Arts Center is pleased to announce auditions for the October Halloween musical thriller production of Sweeney Todd; The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire on April 20, 2013. This professional production directed by Ric Averill will feature a new incarnation of the Free State Liberation Orchestra under the musical direction of Patty Ahern. This is a four week commitment beginning October 7 with most rehearsals being mid to late afternoon through evening. Performance dates are October 25, 26 and 27, a special Halloween performance on October 31 at 9 pm, and November 1 & 2, and 3. Roles being cast include: Anthony Hope - Baritone/Tenor A young, naive sailor who has rescued Todd and falls in love with Johanna Barker. Johanna Barker - Soprano Todd's beautiful young daughter, claimed by Judge Turpin as his own ward. Tobias Ragg - Tenor A simple young lad who works first for Pirelli, and then for Mrs. Lovett, but does not trust Todd. Beadle Bamford - Tenor/Countertenor Turpin's right-hand man and accomplice to his dirty deeds. Beggar Woman/Lucy Barker - Mezzo-soprano A mad crone with a filthy tongue whose interjections go unheeded, but who is eventually revealed to be Lucy Barker, the wife of Benjamin Barker. Adolfo Pirelli/Danny O'Higgins' - Tenor An Irish charlatan and former employee of Benjamin Barker's who has since developed a public persona as a flashy, Italian barber; he attempts to blackmail Todd whom he ultimately recognizes from his youth. In some productions Pirelli has been played by a woman but still portrayed as a male character. Judge Turpin - Bass/Baritone A lustful, immoral, power hungry man. Twists the law to suit him. Chorus We are seeking additional male and female chorus members and understudies. All auditionees should bring 16 bars of any song from a Sondheim Musical (please bring music). Accompanist will be provided. Songs from Sweeney Todd ARE acceptable and encouraged. Please be prepared to sing all of the selection and to sight read. Auditionees should also prepare an under one minute dramatic monologue, 20th & 21st Century material preferred. Equity Actors should call the Arts Center to set up a time slot between 10 am and 1 pm. Callbacks will be scheduled with individual actors. Some callbacks will be held at 2 pm on the day of auditions. Auditionees must be at least 16 years of age. 16 to 18-year-olds may be cast as non-paid Apprentices and/or Understudies.
