Filmed over nearly three years, "Waste Land" follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys to his native Brazil an wold's largest garbage dump, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of "catadores" - self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. This film offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. The KU Area Studies Centers invite you to attend the International Environmental Film Festival on Wednesday evenings from 9/19 to 10/11.This film festival is organized by the University of Kansas Center for East Asian Studies, Center of Latin American Studies, Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies and the Center for Global & International Studies and the Kansas African Studies Center.
