The Raven Book Store will host A Conversation about Gender, Race, Space, and the Pursuit of Social Justice at 7 p.m., Wednesday, September 12, at The Raven (6 E. 7th St., Lawrence, Kan.). The event features authors and University of Kansas scholars Shawn Leigh Alexander, Jennifer Hamer and Randal Maurice Jelks. Shawn Leigh Alexander is the author of An Army of Lions: The Civil Rights Struggle Before the NAACP and teaches African and African American studies at KU. Jennifer Hamer is the author of Abandoned in the Heartland Work, Family, and Living in East St. Louis and What It Means to Be Daddy: Fatherhood for Black Men Living Away from Their Children. She is a professor in the Department of American Studies at KU. Randal Maurice Jelks is the author of Benjamin Elijah Mays, Schoolmaster of the Movement: A Biography and African Americans in the Furniture City: The Struggle for Civil Rights in Grand Rapids. He is an associate professor of American Studies and African American Studies at KU.
