Who are these Antioquia kids and where did they come from? Antioquia {an-tee-OH-kee-ah} combines the very old and the very new. The traditional rhythms they found during travels through South America and West Africa weave their way through a psychedelic fusion of progressive rock and funk. Every show includes traditional and original percussion songs performed on the floor amidst the audience. The five-piece lives and rehearses in Oakland, California. The line up is Adley Penner on guitar, Craig Miller on drum kit, Paul Martin on bass guitar, Rachel Antony-Levine on keyboard and lead vocals, and Tomas Salcedo on guitar. Each member sings and plays percussion. Antioquia has released three studio albums and toured extensively throughout the United States. Adley grew up in Chilliwack, British Columbia listening to Van Halen, Megadeath and Primus and playing in metal and funk bands before taking off on worldly adventures through Asia and South America. Craig grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and learned drum kit in Madison with indie rock band Long Story Short (now Selfish Gene) before embarking on his own adventure through Europe and then to Ecuador where he first met Adley. They decided to move to Colombia together into a house in the mountains above the city of Medellin in the departament of Antioquia. There they began jamming, gigging, writing, and learning Colombian folkloric music. Two years later they moved to San Francisco where they met Paul. Paul grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he learned to play bass from his musical parents and by gigging with rock, funk, and jazz bands. He moved to San Francisco in 2006 to pursue a musical career and found Antioquia. Rachel grew up in Columbus, Ohio performing in musicals and listening to Tori Amos, Fiona Apple and Joan Osborne. She led an original rock band called Rachel and the Brothers Grimm before moving to Portland for school, then to San Francisco where she met Tomas, then to Northampton, Massachusetts for more school. In March of 2011 former singer Maddy Streicek left the band and Rachel returned to San Francisco to join Antioquia for a tour that included her and Tomas’ wedding. Tomas was born in New Jersey and grew up in Santiago, Chile. His mom began teaching him guitar when he was 10 and by high school he was learning Metallica and Megadeath songs and playing in hard rock bands. He moved to the San Francisco Bay Area for college in 2002 and there he met Antioquia and Rachel, but soon after traveled to Ghana where he studied music and learned about the manufacture of traditional African percussion instruments and worked with artisan collectives to help export their products.
