With Christmas right around the corner and Advent starting this Sunday, it is a good time to talk about the liturgical calendar. Yes, yes, it is a thing that only super-church-nerds are into, I supposed, but it has the potential for being a powerful tool for rooting yourself in the mystical instead of the normal hubbub of everyday.
I just found out via Richard Beck’s blog Experimental Theology about a new liturgical calendar that you can actually use like calendar that is endorsed by, get this, Walter Brueggemann, Phyllis Tickle, Stanley Hauerwas, Marva Dawn and Eugene Peterson. Maybe those names don’t mean anything to you, but they are the heart of modern progressive Christianity. Anytime all these people point to something, I check it out.
