Book by James Lapine, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Directed by John Staniunas Musical Direction by Ryan McCall Performances are November 10, 15, 16, and 17 at 7:30 pm and November 11 and 18 at 2:30 pm in the Crafton-Preyer Theatre. Combining the well-known fairy tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood with a newly crafted story of a couple who desperately want a child, this 1987 Tony Award-Winning musical explores growing up, parents and children, responsibility, morality, and wish fulfillment and its consequences. Sondheim's syncopated music is a splendid accompaniment to Lapine's enchanting story of a baker and his wife who have been cursed with childlessness by a witch and so set out on a journey into the woods to break the spell. Along the way they meet a host of fairy tale characters, each on a mission of their own. When the characters must come together to fight a common enemy, they see the pitfalls of selfishness and greed. They learn that goals are not as important as the journey to achieve them and that enduring meaning is found in community and family.
