KU Credit Union will conduct a Shred Fest event Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Credit Union’s South branch, located at 2221 West 31st Street in Lawrence. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Everyone in the community is invited to bring their old documents and computer discs that contain sensitive information and have them securely shredded for no cost. As an extra service, the public may also bring electronics and have them securely recycled by PROSHRED for a small fee. “The single most effective weapon against fraud and identity theft is an informed, educated citizen,” said KU Credit Union Vice President Ginger Wehner. “Shred Fest is one of the different ways we help people in our community protect themselves against this increasing danger. This year, we are happy to be able to offer a way for the public to also securely dispose of hard drives, cell phones and other electronics.” All shredding will be conducted by a professional shredding company. Participants may bring up to two boxes of old sensitive documents, not common recycling items or newspapers. There is no charge for document shredding or for the disposing of hard drives, cell phones and small electronics. Other electronic recycling will be done for a small fee. For example, printers and flat panel monitors may be recycled for $5 each. CRT monitors, microwave ovens and televisions less than 35” may be recycled for $10 each.
