Antioquia / Making Movies / Tangent Arc

Event details

Easy to fall in love with, hard not to dance to, and plain difficult to describe, Antioquia is gaining momentum across the nation with a string of tour dates stopping at The Bottleneck on Friday June 1st.

Bottleneck 737 New Hampshire Street Lawrence, KS 66044-2737 (785) 841-5483 18+ // $7 // 9:30pm

Antioquia, a quintet from Oakland, California consisting of four men and a lady, makes music that inspires raucous dancing and deep listening. Antioquia's shows are high energy, captivating and anything but predictable. Peppered with fits of improvisation, bouts of silliness and fiery percussion pieces performed amidst the crowd, the audience is brought closer to the stage and closer to each other. Antioquia will be appearing with Making Movies at The Bottleneck on Friday June 1st.

The musical atmosphere of the San Francisco Bay Area has been a perfect incubator for Antioquia's eclectic sound, but the band was hatched much further south. Guitarist Adley Penner and drummer Craig Miller discovered their musical chemistry while playing music in Ecuador, where they became enthralled with Afro-Columbian folklore music. In 2006, after two years of performing, a Craigslist ad delivered bassist Paul "Fresh" Martin. Rachel Antony-Levine on lead vocals and keys and Tomas Salcedo on guitar, complete the equation.

With influences ranging from Mahavishnu Orchestra to Primus to AfroColombian songstress Toto La Mompasina and traditional music from West Africa, Antioquia’s primary mission is to unite humans in the healing act of dance through a genre that they have dubbed, “Afro-Colombian Psychedelic Lovefunk.” What distinguishes Antioquia from other genre-bending acts are the rhythms that permeate their sound, from the Afro-Colombian styles to their adaptations of West African rhythms. Their earnest let-it-all-hang-out stage presence encourages the same from the audience, creating a feedback loop that builds momentum as onlookers are sucked onto the dance floor.

Since their formation in 2004, Antioquia has toured extensively throughout the U.S. quickly becoming a festival favorite. They have appeared at Floydfest, Groovefest, Lovefest and several other established festivals. Their highly anticipated third studio album was released this May.
