Sgt Samuel J. Churchill - Camp # 4 - Lawrence, KS - Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War( SUV) - Dept of Kansas will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 6:30 PM at Watkins Museum in Lawrence, KS.
All interested in US Civil War are invited to attend. Guest speaker is SUV brother Craig Sundell on Civil War period postage:
"Civil War Patriotic Postal Covers During the Civil War many Americans (Union and Confederate) used envelopes with printed slogans and images to show there allegiance and patriotism. These showed in graphic form the sender's feelings toward the conflict. They included simple flags, slogans, battle scenes and cartoons. These were truly the 'bumper stickers' of the times, often using lampoon and caricature to express the beliefs of the sender. When mailed, these letter envelopes were seen by many people who came in contact with or were shown the envelopes 'covering' the letters inside. The presentation will show much of this 150 year old postal and Civil War history with actual covers passed around for viewing and an oral history."
NOTE: All Camp 4 members and others interested are invited to come for to PepperJax's(around 5:00 to 5:30 PM) at 947 New Hampshire in Lawrence for a Pre-meeting soda and/or meal prior to the 6:30 PM meeting at Watkins Museum 1047 Mass.
