Much of Purity Ring’s sound is very much of the moment—warbling base, skittish beats, and otherworldly pitched vocals— but the Canadian electronic duo of Megan James and Corin Roderick bring a gothic artfulness to songcraft and performance. Like many of today’s best electronic artists, Purity Ring gained notoriety for mysterious tracks that circulated the internet, and as a result their recently released debut, Shrines, has been anticipated for some time now. With a keen focus on the corporeal—Shrines is full of unnerving images of the body and its potential dislocations—Purity Ring draws a delicate balance between machine and flesh, organic and metal. Combining production that wouldn't be out place on your favorite hot jamz station with Megan James' striking poetry and sterling voice, the band packs real emotion with its digest of current electronic trends. Already well known for their homespun and outré approach to performing, using a custom light tree that syncs to their music, their show Monday night at the appropriately claustrophobic and dark Jackpot Saloon promises to be ionizing. With Headaches and Cousins.
