On Friday, October 28, the Watkins Community Museum of History and the Spencer Museum of Art invite the public to the opening of the exhibition Living Memories, as part of Lawrence’s monthly Final Fridays. The Watkins will be open for extended hours and feature a special performance, refreshments, and a hands-on activity to celebrate this collaboration between the two institutions. Living Memories: Celebrating Day of the Dead was developed through a partnership between the Watkins and the Spencer museums. The exhibition explores how different cultures commemorate those who have died. Featuring objects and images related to Latin American celebrations of Dias de los Muertos, on loan from the Spencer Museum, and photographs of Douglas County’s own Oak Hill Cemetery, Living Memories explores how gravesites can reflect the personalities of the dead and how we celebrate the lives of our loved ones.
