The History of Art Graduate Students Organization of the Kress Foundation Department of Art History at the University of Kansas will host the biannual History of Art Graduate Students Symposium March 4-5, 2011, at the Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Mississippi St., Lawrence, Kansas, 66045. The theme of this year’s symposium is "Articulating Identity in Visual Culture." Graduate students in the Kress Foundation Department of Art History organize the Symposium. The symposium provides a forum for graduate students from art history programs across the United States to come together to present original research on the history of art. Sixteen graduate students will present papers from a variety of areas and periods of art history. Awards will be presented for the papers with the most innovative research. Dr. R. Tripp Evans, Professor of Art History at Wheaton College in Massachusetts and author of the new Grant Wood biography, "Grant Wood, A Life," will give a keynote address on Friday March 4th at 6:00 PM. Dr. Evans’ talk, “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Grant Wood, Identity, and Artifice,” will be presented in the auditorium of the Spencer Museum of Art at 6:00 PM, Friday March 4, 2011. Dr. Evans’ presentation will be immediately followed by a book signing and reception in the museum’s Central Court. All events are open to the public, no ticket required. This event is sponsored by the Kress Foundation Department of Art History at KU, the Spencer Museum of Art, The Spencer Museum of Art Advanced-Level Interns and the Andrew W. Mellon Academic Programs Initiative, the Hall Center, The College of Arts and Sciences, The KU Student Senate, Coca-Cola, and Restaurant 715.
