Let’s talk about how God calls us — since it is like the only thing liberal mainline theologians think God does or can do. Let’s look at it biblically, first considering the way Jesus called the disciples and then in a couple other places in the big book. A good place to start would be Matthew 4:18-22. Then let’s talk about some of these questions: What is call? How do we recognize call? Are all people called? Is it powerful? Are we called to particular jobs? How does calling work in romantic relationships? Do you feel God is calling you? to what? Does God call everyone? Are there particular calls or are we all called? Is call a cheap idea? Was Dr. King called? Gandhi? Mother Teresa? Sam Brownback? Barack Obama? How about your mother - did your mother feel called? Then the big ones: What are your talents? How do they match up with needs in the world? And, what would God have you do? Come with your thinking caps, your debating jeans, you listening mittens, your sharing sweater and have a beer with your Bible.
