The Lawrence Potter's guild will be featured at the Lumberyard Arts Center Gallery beginning Friday August 19th. This Guild has been producing pottery collectively for over 30 years. Seven artists will represent the group at the Lumberyard including Kelly Pinet and Christy Carlisle. Collectively, these artists have over 150 years experience in clay media. The group includes two Baldwin City residents, Christy Carlisle and Phyllis Nelson. Although these potters are united as a group, their styles vary dramatically. Included in the show will be everything from a wheel thrown functional vase to a 3 foot tall sculpture. Pottery for sale will fill the gallery and the gift shop. The opening reception will coincide with the August Artwalk, from 7- 9pm. The show will remain open during regular gallery hours of Tuesdays through Fridays from 1 to 4 and Saturdays 9am to noon through September 10th. The Lumberyard Arts Center is located at 718 High St., Baldwin City. www.lumberyardartscenter.org. Kelly Pinet is a full-time potter working in a rural area near Baldwin City. She says, “Everything inspires me to create. I love open spaces and sunlight. I create pottery that reflects the life found within all things. I love to throw on the wheel and enjoy combining these pieces with hand built forms.” Kelly first exhibited at the Kansas City Art Institute at the age of 17. She graduated from the University of Kansas and has taught pottery to people of all ages. Christy Carlisle says that she has always been inspired by the earth and historical connection to primitive cultures and the symbols that represents them. For her, the last three years have been a time of exploration into alternative firing methods such as pit and barrel firings along with American Raku while continuing the painterly manner developed from decades of creating primarily two-dimensional artwork. Christy resides with her husband in Baldwin City, Kansas and enjoys roaming the country with camera and sketchbook in hand. Most pieces are then completed in studio at a later date.
