The Civil Wars There's a lot of buzz around Nashville duo The Civil Wars and for good reason, they're great. John Paul White and Joy Williams compliment each other perfectly both vocally and instrumentally as they alternate between lead and back-up on their EP and first full-length "Barton Hallow." Williams voice is a like a wounded bird — gentle yet cutting, while White is able to convey a lot of tortured emotion without sounding like a hack. As for the music itself, based off of their previous EP, "Poison Wine" they make slow-building, semi-anthemic declarations of love and loss, while occasionally moving into more folksy trappings. This is a band on the verge.
