- Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Miss., KU campus, Lawrence
- Cost: Free
- Age limit: All ages
The 3rd annual festival is free and open to the public. It will feature art for sale by local and student visual artists, performance art, live music by local bands, the kickoff for the 2010 Southwest Junior High School “Bulldog” podcast series, and the opening of the Spencer’s annual It Starts With Art! children’s art exhibition. Booths will be set up for local and student artists and KU cultural groups to display their artwork and information. Participating performance groups include the KU African Dance group, Les Belles, the KU African Drum ensemble, and a May Pole Dance led by KU dance instructor Joan Stone, who is the Spencer’s Honorary Curator of Gesture. Festival coordinator Reina Detrixhe says the event offers a chance for people to come together and learn about the KU and Lawrence art communities. “I hope that people of all ages can learn about different cultures and artists,” says Reina. “Lawrence is a town where people can openly express their creativity through all styles of art, and I hope the festival can encompass and share all of those styles with everyone.” In conjunction with the Spencer exhibition Machine in a Void: World War I & the Graphic Arts, there will be a “mechanical stamp” activity for all visitors. Other festivities include face painting, a sidewalk calligraphy demonstration, and a screening from the first season of The Jetsons in the SMA Auditorium. Mississippi Street in front of the Museum will be closed to traffic during the event and free parking will be available in the nearby Kansas Union parking garage.
