On Thursday, Feb. 25 at 6 PM, Seoul-based artist Kim Jongku will talk about his site specific video installation Mobile Landscape, which opens that evening and will remain on view through June 25 in the Spencer’s Electronic Media Gallery. Kim is creating the installation as part of a two-week residency funded by the William T. Kemper Foundation. Working with black, steel powder—the result of an industrial grinding process—Kim “writes” poetic inscriptions on the floor of a pristine, white environment, much like a Tibetan sand painting. Then, using closed circuit cameras positioned on the floor among the peaks and valleys of the calligraphic installation, Kim broadcasts constructed vistas that in appearance evoke traditional Korean ink-and-brush painting. However, the live feed not only inverts the typical scale of a landscape painting—a shoe now dwarfs a mountain—it also distorts the space by broadcasting the gallery scene in remote locations. The Spencer plans to broadcast Mobile Landscape in a wide variety of both campus and off-campus locations. Kim Jongku was born 1953 in Choong Nam, South Korea. He graduated with a B.F.A. from Seoul National University in 1993 and an M.F.A from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London in 1996. Kim has exhibited widely in Europe and Asia, including the Gwangju Biennale (2006), Re-Imagining Asia, Berlin (2007), and solo exhibitions at One and J. Gallery, Seoul, Korea. Kim currently teaches in the Department of Sculpture at Ewha Women’s University in Seoul. Thursday, Feb. 25 / 6 PM / SMA Auditorium (reception follows)
