The Lied Center of Kansas and Dave and Gunda Hiebert present Haochen Zhang, one of two gold medal winners in the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Facing more than 150 brilliant pianists from around the world, Haochen Zhang of China and Nobuyuki Tsujii of Japan, tied for the gold medal on June 7, 2009. Zhang has been selected to perform at the Feb. 16, 2010 performance. At just 19 years old, Zhang was the youngest participant in the Cliburn competition. Since 1962, this esteemed piano competition has honored Van Cliburn, who was only 23 years old in 1958, when he won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow—at the height of the Cold War.
