Art all around, custom screen-printing of t-shirts, live music, cheap sunglasses, ‘80s-inspired appetizers, candy, a soup-can drive and more add up to make “WARhol & PEACE,” the Spencer Museum of Art Student Advisory Board’s 2009 fall student party, scheduled for next Thursday, October 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. The event is free and open to the public. “WARhol & Peace” draws inspiration from two fall exhibitions at the Spencer: Big Shots: Andy Warhol, Celebrity Culture, and the 1980s, and The Graphic Imperative: International Posters for Peace, Social Justice, and the Environment, 1965-2005. Local art collective Wonder Fair will be custom screen-printing t-shirts with designs by Asteroid Head. The shirts will be available to purchase for $10 ($5 for the shirt, $5 for the design), or students may bring their own plain t-shirts and pay $5 for the design. The party will also feature live music by Blow Chi, the “Brodioke” alter ego of Brodie Rush, frontman of Kansas City alternative band Be/Non. And, in the SMA Auditorium, there will be a screening of Chuck Workman’s fascinating 1991 documentary film "Superstar: The Life & Times of Andy Warhol." Students are encouraged to bring a can of soup to donate to the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen. L.I.N.K., located at 221 W. 10th, provides a pleasant, safe place for the hungry or lonely to share a free, nutritious meal and the companionship of one another.
