Those Darlins could probably get away with just being three cute gals playing classic country songs (it's how they started, at least), but they rev the engine by electrifying the whole shebang and making it sound more like The Ramones than the Carter Family. The group's goodtime country-punk is a hoot and a holler polished off with a shot of Old Overholt on songs like "DUI or Die" and "Snaggle Tooth Mama." Lawrence's Spook Lights foursome puts on one of the most entertaining shows in town, thanks in part to one of Lawrence's most frenetic and captivating performers in Rob "Scary Manilow" Gillaspie (who also been known to blog here) and lead guitarist Kelly "Curvacia VaVoom" Nightengale. NOTE: King Khan is no longer on this bill. Apparently he was arrested en route to St. Louis and did not make last night's show. The promoter confirmed they would not make it to Lawrence either. Refunds for those $12 tickets are available at point of purchase. Those Darlins and The Spook Lights tickets are $7. King Khan will be here soon no doubt...so, for future reference: The notion of a two-person rock band would be getting old if acts like The King Khan and BBQ Show didn't pull it off so damn well. Composed of former Spacesh*ts frontman Mark Sultan and guitarist Blackshake, the duo's retrofitted garage rock would fit comfortably into a Quentin Tarantino movie. It's raw, soulful, lewd -- and you can definitely do the twist to it. But there's a also a punk edge informed by sleazy reverb denizens like The Cramps, and a whole lotta shake-rattle-and-roll to do right by Jerry Lee.
