Japanese marimbist Makoto Nakura gives this concert at the Spencer Museum of Art, accompanied by cellist Matthew Herren and flutist David Fedele, Nakura will perform his original piece “The Wood and Forests Project.” The performance is presented in conjunction with "Trees & Other Ramifications: Branches in Nature and Culture." The event is free and open to the public. Nakura, who was born in Kobe, Japan, began to play the marimba when he was eight years old. After completing bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Musashino College in Tokyo, he studied at the Royal Music Academy in London. In 1994, Nakura became the first marimbist to win First Prize in the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions. He has performed with the New York Chamber Symphony and has given recitals at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall and the Kennedy Center. Nakura will also teach a master class for the KU percussion studio during his visit. The marimba is a member of the percussion family, similar to the xylophone. “The Wood and Forests Project” incorporates scores that increase the awareness of one’s environment as the music brings the imagery of wood and forests to life. Nakura will be accompanied by cellist Matthew Herren and KU Associate Professor of Music David Fedele, on flute. Both musicians are members of Trio Fedele. Fedele, who also won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1988, has collaborated with Nakura previously on multiple concerts. Feldele says he looks forward to performing with Nakura again. “We both share the same passion for music,” says Fedele. “We get together and we realize what’s on the score with great detail.”
