A select group of outstanding Kansas City area high school wind and percussion students are set to perform at the Lied Center on May 4. These students make up the KU Kansas City Youth Wind Symphony. The members of this ensemble are appointed by band director nomination, and a total of 14 high schools are represented from the Kansas City area. The ensemble is conducted by Dr. Scott Weiss, KU director of bands. The assistant conductor is Haley Armstrong, a KU doctoral student in wind conducting. “The mission of this ensemble is to provide the highest level of musical opportunity and experience to a select group of high school musicians in the Kansas City area,” said Weiss. “In addition to the annual concert series, it is the aim of this ensemble to lead through the commissioning of new works, performance at various conventions, regional, national and international tours and educational recordings.” The program on May 4 includes an eclectic mix of works, including those of Camille Saint-Saens, Gustav Holst, Vincent Persichetti, Johann Sebastian Bach and Peter Graham. Additionally, a small consort of players from the ensemble will perform Gordon Jacob’s “Old Wine in New Bottles” for twelve winds.
