From the promoter: The University of Kansas Department of Music and Dance will host a conference on 19th-century music featuring presentations and performances from scholars across the United States and Canada.

The program will commence with a multimedia presentation by KU theatre professor John Tibbetts. Tibbetts’ presentation, entitled “Schumann in Love,” will be held in Alderson Auditorium of the Kansas Union at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, and is open to the public.

“Schumann in Love” will feature a husband and wife piano duo, Stanislav and Svetlana Levin, international pianists and graduates of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory; Leslie Bennett, of the KU Department of Theatre and Film, who will sing songs by Robert and Clara Schumann; film clips from the Schumann movies “Song of Love” (1947) and “Spring Symphony” (1983); and readings of letters between Robert and Clara Schumann.

The conference also will include various sessions and lecture recitals on Thursday and Friday devoted to Louis Spohr and Edward MacDowell; French opera, ballet and symphony; issues of word and music relationship; notable American musical personalities of mid-century; and questions of genre and musical tradition.
