“Immokalee Farm Workers: Modern Day Slavery in our Kitchens”
- Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, noon
- Ecumenical Campus Ministries, 1204 Oread Ave., Lawrence
- Age limit: Not available
Presenters: Parendi Birdie, Lawrence High School senior; Zach Bealer, KU freshman, Great Bend; Clarice Amorim, KU senior, Brazil; and Sam Snyder, KU senior, Topeka. Farm workers who pick fruits and vegetables, some of which we eat everyday, are abused in the fields of Immokalee, Florida. All of us who shop at major supermarkets, eat at Chipotle, or on campus are contributing to this. A group of concerned Lawrencians found this appalling and went to the location where the abuses occur. Their presentation will bring the current issues facing important farm workers today.Optional lunch with reservation, 11:30 a.m., 843-4933.
