The University of Kansas and the University of Costa Rica/UCR Baroque Ensemble will perform a series of concerts at KU and around Lawrence this month. These events are sponsored by the KU Office of the Chancellor and KU International Programs.The Baroque Ensemble will perform a live preview performance on KANU 91.5 fm at 11:10 a.m. on Thursday, January 15; a performance is scheduled at the KU Edwards Campus at 7:30 p.m. on January 15; an outreach concert is scheduled at Southwest Junior High in Lawrence on January 16; and a final performance will take place at the Lied Center of Kansas on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. The members of the ensemble also will teach master classes and present a recital class lecture. The concerts at the Lied Center and the KU Edwards Campus are free and open to the public.The ensemble will perform the works of unknown or lesser known Baroque Latin American, Spanish and French composers from Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Costa Rica as well as Spain and France. The talents of Hugo Vera, KU doctoral candidate in voice, Zamira Barquero, University of Costa Rica professor of voice, and Gerardo Duarte, UCR professor of piano, will be added to the original ensemble of Isabel Jeremias, UCR professor of bassoon, Maria Clara Vargas, UCR professor of piano, Tami Lee Hughes, KU professor of violin and Margaret Marco, KU professor of oboe. The variety of offerings will bring awareness to the exchange program and the partnership that has existed between KU and the University of Costa Rica for 50 years. The University of Kansas and the University of Costa Rica Baroque Ensemble was formed to continue the collaboration that was initiated in March 2008 at the Commemorative Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Academic Cooperation between two universities. At this event, KU music professors Tami Lee Hughes and Margaret Marco were invited to perform at the University of Costa Rica with UCR faculty Isabel Jeremias and Maria Clara Vargas.For more information, please contact the KU Department of Music & Dance at 785.864.3436.
