The Lied Center of Kansas and the Lawrence Journal-World present the Broadway classic, The Pajama Game. This Tony Award-winning revival of the original Broadway show has a high-energy, jazzy and upbeat score including popular hits and musical theatre standards such as Hey There, Steam Heat and Hernando’s Hideaway.Based on the novel 7-1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell, spirited Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory employee/union representative Babe Williams and dashing factory superintendent Sid Sorkin are in the middle of clashing over a labor demand for a 7 1/2 cent raise when they find they have a lot more to negotiate. When love blooms for the two, the classic battle of the sexes plays out on the factory floor. With music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, the original 1955 Broadway production of The Pajama Game won three Tony Awards including Best Musical. The 2006 revival of the show starred talented recording artist Harry Connick Jr., received nine Tony nominations that year and won two; Best Revival of a Musical and Best Choreography. The original show ran on Broadway from May 13, 1954 to Nov. 24, 1956.The 1957 film version starred Doris Day and John Raitt and launched the career of Shirley MacLaine. To celebrate The Pajama Game at the Lied Center, Weavers Department Store in downtown Lawrence will have a pajama-themed window display from Feb. 17 to Feb. 27.Tickets are on sale at the Lied Center Ticket Office (785-864-2787 voice or 785-864-2777/TDD), the University Theatre Ticket Office–Murphy Hall (785-864-3982), SUA Office–Kansas Union (785-864-SHOW), and online at www.lied.ku.edu.
