Event details

The Lied Center of Kansas and Capitol Federal Savings present The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a Grammy-nominated and Tony Awardwinning Broadway musical comedy that unfolds at the local spelling bee. This fun, fast-paced musical about one of childhood’s most thrilling events, Spelling Bee follows six quirky adolescent characters and four volunteer audience members as they vie to be spelling champion. While teaching the prepubescent braniacs that winning isn’t everything and losing doesn’t make you a loser, three grown-ups, who hardly made it to adulthood themselves, perform their official duties at the competition. This tuneful, offbeat and at times heartwarming show offers volunteer audience members the opportunity to become part of the action as on-stage spellers.Spelling Bee is directed by James Lapine, the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winner (Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods). The musical, conceived by Rebecca Feldman, with additional material written by Jay Reiss, features music and lyrics by Tony Award-winner William Finn (Falsettos, Elegies, A New Brain) and a Tony Award-winning book by Rachel Sheinkin.Spelling Bee is based on C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play by The Farm improv group in New York City. Spelling Bee had its world premiere production in July 2004 at Barrington Stage Company, in Sheffield, Mass. Under the direction of James Lapine, Spelling Bee officially opened off-Broadway in February 2005 and then moved to Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre, opening in May the same year and running until 2008.Tickets are available at the Lied Center of Kansas.
