Lawrence's Calamity Cubes perform with acoustic guitar, banjo, and upright bass. They'd be hard-pressed to call themselves a bluegrass band, instead preferring to identify as a bunch of songwriters who happened to learn bluegrass instruments (i.e. acts like the Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show). After a short run in Wichita, the Cubes relocated to Lawrence to play the downtown circuit. They've been running at the speed of a steam train ever since, and they recently celebrated the release of their second album "Long Cold Winter." The Kansas City Bear Fighters used to be The Denver Broncos, but their legal department didn't have the resources to mount a defense against a pro football team. Employing ukulele, mandolin, acoustic guitar, upright bass and strategically selected Hawaiian shirts, the group's gleeful sound recalls Tiny Tim or Jimmy Buffett after a helium-sucking contest. Either way, the group's goodtime blend of ragtime, old-time, and "Time After Time" goes down smooth like a Mezcal worm. If you don't believe us, just check out this podcast. Like many country music aficionados, Adam Lee came to the genre after a youth in punk rock. After growing up in Virginia, Lee drifted to Arizona and started a band called The Bible Belt with multi-instrumentalist Johnny Kay. The duo relocated to Kansas City a couple years back, founding a partnership called Adam Lee and the Dead Horse Sound Company (the latter being the name for Kay’s record-producing alias).
