The Whigs are a fresh-faced trio that recently graduated college and impressed ATO Records (home to Gomez, Mike Doughty and My Morning Jacket) with their indefatigable performances. The group's southern-tinged rock tunes built for guitar, bass and big ol' drums. They recorded their debut album "Mission Control" at an empty University of Georgia frat house, which is not to say it's frat-tastic, but rather delightfully drunk with fraternal hooks. Channeling the glory days of '90s indie rock (Sonic Youth, Pavement, Dinosaur Jr.), The Dactyls employ alternate tunings and interweaving lead guitars to create densely textured, off-kilter tunes. The group recently tracked an album in Austin with engineer/producer Jim Vollentine and should be on top of their game following a rowdy performance at the Kaw Valley Kickball party. Opener Tommy Hoskins is the former frontman of Buffalo Saints; a retired Lawrence band that purveyed a melodic brand of rockified Americana. Now solo, Hoskins has a sparkling new batch of piano-based songs.
