Lawrence's Calamity Cubes perform with acoustic guitar, banjo, and upright bass. They'd be hard-pressed to call themselves a bluegrass band, instead preferring to identify as a bunch of songwriters who happened to learn bluegrass instruments (i.e. acts like the Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show). After a short run in Wichita, the Cubes relocated to Lawrence to play the downtown circuit. They've been running at the speed of a steam train ever since, and tonight they'll celebrate the release of their second album "Long Cold Winter" before hitting the road for a lengthy tour.
