Wichita's Paper Airplanes has gotten a lot of mileage out of its debut album "Boyhood," releasing it initially in 2005 and re-releasing it in 2007 to praise from Pitchfork Media, Spin, and other occasionally insightful pundits. The album's cathartic indie rock blends the urgency of Neutral Milk Hotel with the woozy melodic sense of early Midlake. Though somewhat sloppily executed, "Boyhood" showed enough promise to stir up a national buzz not entirely reflected in the band's popularity around these here parts. There's still plenty of time to change that, however, and tonight's show with three other Midwest up-and-comers should stir up a fair bit of excitement towards the cause -- and hopefully a second album. Openers The Photo Atlas bills itself as "the young Einsteins of the cacophonous dance party." The Denver band's post-punky jams take cues from At the Drive-In and Bloc Party: explosive disco-beat numbers with two lead guitars and a sugar-rush rhythm section.
